Michigan men's basketball head coach Mike Boynton Jr. has made the first major addition to his coaching staff, hiring former Brown head coach Mike Martin as an assistant coach.

Martin arrives in Ann Arbor after spending 14 seasons leading his alma mater. He leaves Brown as the winningest head coach in program history, compiling a 171-202 career record. Martin guided the Bears to their first 20-win season during the 2018-19 campaign and earned Ivy League Coach of the Year honors that season.

The move gives Boynton an experienced former Division I head coach as he builds his first Michigan staff. Martin brings an extensive background in recruiting, player development and program leadership, along with a strong understanding of the academic demands placed on student-athletes at an Ivy League institution.

Boynton was officially elevated to Michigan's permanent head coaching position after serving as the program's interim coach following Dusty May's departure for the NBA. Boynton previously spent two seasons on Michigan's staff, where he played a key role in the Wolverines' defensive success and player development.

Martin's hiring also represents a significant career move. The 2004 Brown graduate had led the Bears since the 2012-13 season and was one of the longest-tenured head coaches in the Ivy League. Brown will now begin a national search for its next head coach.

Michigan enters the 2026-27 season looking to build on the momentum of its national championship campaign. Adding a veteran coach with more than a decade of head coaching experience gives Boynton another respected voice on the bench as the Wolverines prepare to defend their place among college basketball's elite.
