The University of Michigan has officially promoted Mike Boynton Jr. to head coach of its men's basketball program, selecting the veteran assistant to lead the Wolverines following one of the most successful stretches in school history.

Director of Athletics Warde Manuel announced Friday that Boynton has agreed to a two-year contract and will serve as the David and Meredith Kaplan Men's Basketball Head Coach.

Boynton enters his third season in Ann Arbor after helping Michigan compile a 64-13 record over the past two years. During that span, the Wolverines captured the 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship, won the 2026 Big Ten regular-season title, and secured the program's second NCAA national championship.

"Mike is a veteran assistant with strong head coaching experience and a clear understanding of the standard we expect at Michigan," Manuel said. "Over the past two seasons, he has been an invaluable member of our staff, bringing stability, leadership and perspective during an important period of success."

University President Domenico Grasso also praised Boynton's leadership, highlighting his integrity and commitment to student-athlete development while expressing confidence that he will continue Michigan's tradition of excellence.

Boynton said he is grateful for the opportunity to lead the program and intends to build upon the championship culture established in Ann Arbor.

"We have built a championship culture and a standard that everyone associated with this program takes great pride in," Boynton said. "We have an outstanding group of players, and I'm excited to get to work and continue the success we've established together."

Before joining Michigan in 2024, Boynton spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, where he posted a 119-109 record and guided the Cowboys to an NCAA Tournament appearance. During his tenure, he coached Cade Cunningham, who became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Boynton quickly made his mark at Michigan. Serving as the Wolverines' defensive coordinator, he helped transform the program into one of the nation's top defensive teams. Michigan finished among the national leaders in defensive efficiency before leading the country during its championship season.

His impact extended beyond game planning. Boynton played a key role in roster construction, recruiting, and player development, helping Michigan produce four first-round NBA Draft selections in two seasons, including three lottery picks in the 2026 NBA Draft—Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg, and Aday Mara. Danny Wolf was also selected in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft.

Now, Boynton assumes full leadership of one of college basketball's premier programs. With an experienced coaching background, established relationships within the program, and a reputation for developing talent, he inherits a roster with championship expectations.

As Michigan prepares for the 2026-27 season, the Wolverines are betting that continuity, culture, and Boynton's leadership will keep the program competing at the highest level of college basketball.
